Women’s Study Class

December 3, 2007 by jhouston

I love my women’s study class. It has taught me many of things in the world, and how to look at more than one point of view. When I started taking this class, I was anti-woman. And I am a woman. I could not stand women, or their whining and complaining that they are being done so wrong. From this class I have taking a better understanding them, and where they are coming from. But opinion stays the same. I still can’t stand the whining and complaining, and the wanting to feel sorry for themselves. My grandmother gaves me a statement a while ago. She told me “Don’t talk about it, Be about it” I have gained respect for women who want to be about changing to one day reach a day of feminism, but I still lack the respect for those who just talk and complain the rest of the time. This class has enlightened me. I have more knowledge, and a better outlook on life for myself as woman. I have gained more respect for myself and what I can do. After week 10, millions of things happened, my cousin went in the hospital with a stroke, with millions of boys in the family and being the only girl, I took care of his children, my grandmother soon after in the hospital, i looked after her. I had an uncle pass away, and I as a woman took care was in charge. When I agreed to go on a blind date which is stupid had the gentlemen believe we would try to assault me, but as a stronger woman from this class, I had the strength to turn him. I had the knowledge to obtain power that  I know I have. I could have not finished this class and said, I am women, this is too much stress, life and school. But instead from the readings and the discussions with the other women in the class, I have a better understanding of being woman and am more proud to be a woman. I am no longer ashamed of being a woman. I now know how to embrace who I am as woman. I enjoyed this class more than I thought. It challenged me, and for that I am thankful.

Fundamentalism & Control of Women

December 3, 2007 by jhouston

Control of women is a very strong statement. In a reading by Karen Brown she tries her best to compare and contrast fundamentlism. The greatest point that I believe she was made the anit-abortion movement in the United States. If you look at, if you are against abortion then you are prolife. Prolife is being for living life and not the ending of it. So if the anti-abortionist are for life how do you support things that are against life. How could they be against welfare which helps support the lives of children, and how could they be for war which takes the life of children. I say that, because every human being in the war is someone’s child. Is there an age limit on how long they support prolife. Also there is the debate on Chrisitianity and Enlightenment rationalism. These religions would be great if they weren’t intrepreted for our own benefit. We change a little bit here and a little bit there, just to satisfy our needs. Whether we are changing it for money purposes and just because. But the most disturbing reason for changing is control, and most of the time, men try to change religion for control of women. Enlightenment only fails because we let it.

Crash

I believe that Crash was a well written movie to illustrate the way the world is today. The division in the world was very accurately described. It divided the blacks, whites, hispanics, and other foreign citizens. The movies was very touching because it covered every basis from stereotype to rasism, to classism and feminism. The first stereotype that I saw was Sandra  in the movie and how money made her feel superior and how she thought that she was so much better than everyone else and everything else. There were also the stereotype types of black men being thugs, hispanics working, and the foreign citizens taking away the business away from us(the people in america). There was also feminism when the police officer felt he had the right because he was a man to sexually assualt a women because he had the power to do so. There are stories all over the news about how priest or preachers in the church take advantage of the power they believe they have to assault or rape the women in children in their church. But just like in the movie, everything crashes.

Homophobia

Reading 12 Homophobia

Suzanne Pharr stated homophobia as the irrational fear and hatred of those who love and sexually desire those of the same sex. That almost sounds almost right to me but not really. I mean to me fear is never irrational. We fear things that we don’t know. There is nothing irrational about that. Me personally, I have no problem with homosexuality. I believe that they are some of the happiest people in the world, and that we could learn a thing or two from them. She gets her point across of how the heterosexual people judge them, but as far as I know there is no cure for stupidity. The one of the few things that I agree with her about is that the homosexuals allow the heterosexuals to use that as a weapon to bring them down. Especially women who want to live up these expectations so that they are not ridiculed.  There is no reason why women in America should let being called a lesbian stop them from pursuing the movement. Though the words are harsh and cruel and can hurt, it’s an excuse.

For example, there is a woman in Thailand is the leader of women’s movement. She publishes her book about every two months. She’s not about holding her peace, which I can respect. You will never get you point across if you keep editing yourself trying not to step on other peoples toes. This reading was very educational. I understand the fear homosexuality more, but the only way to get over a fear is to face. Hopefully it will happen for the people in the movement and all homosexuals everywhere. But I believe that will only happen if we can people can get over there fear of ignorance of homosexuality.
